David T. Nederlander founded the Nederlander organization in 1912 while operating
a single theatre out of Detroit. After much success with the Detroit theatre, his
vision of producing and presenting legitimate theatre and managing outdoor venues
flourished into various Nederlander entities across the United States.
Today the Nederlander organization, run by James M. Nederlander and his son James
L. Nederlander owns and/or operates more than 26 theatres and amphitheatres worldwide.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, the Nederlander organization
books, promotes, and produces premium live entertainment at multiple venues, while
being one of the only family run theatre companies still in existence today.
Nederlander is heavily involved with legitimate theatre while promoting and producing
plays and musicals throughout the country and in England. On Broadway, Nederlander’s
theatres include the Richard Rodgers Theatre, Gershwin, and Nederlander Theatres;
In Chicago, The LaSalle Bank Theatre (formerly the Shubert, under renovation); in
London, the Dominion; and in Los Angeles, the Pantages Theatre.
The concert division books, promotes and produces premium live entertainment at
such venues as the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim; the Staples Center in Los Angeles;
the Rabobank Arena, Theatre & Convention Center in Bakersfield; the Save Mart Center
at Fresno State; the Tucson Arena in Arizona; and the San Diego Civic Theatre. Nederlander
also exclusively books and promotes events at the Santa Barbara Bowl, The Grove
of Anaheim, the Tucson Music Hall, and now the Maricopa County Events Center. For
the past 30 years Nederlander has exclusively managed, operated and promoted the
award-winning Greek Theatre in Los Angeles as well as booking live concerts at Los
Angeles’ Wilshire, Henry Fonda, and Pantages Theatres.
Nederlander’s experience in live entertainment venue operation is from the ground
up. Nederlander constructed and operated outstanding American amphitheatres such
as the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey, Pine Knob in Detroit, Poplar Creek
Music Theatre in Chicago, and renovation of the Merriweather Post Pavilion near
Baltimore, Maryland, among others. Additionally, Nederlander has completed extensive
renovations on a number of old vaudeville theatres including The Palace Theatre
in New York, and the Pantages Theatre.
James M. Nederlander is largely credited with establishing the outdoor amphitheatre
concept in the United States. His impressive 60-year plus career in theatre coupled
with his knowledge and experience of presenting live entertainment has contributed
greatly to the success of the Nederlander organization.
Working along side James M. Nederlander is his son James L. Nederlander who is the
third generation of the celebrated family known worldwide. His focus continues to
foster, build and enhance the relationship between Broadway and the concert world
through strengthening their synergies.
